The need for Caring House is great. Duke has nearly 9,000 inpatient and 175,000 outpatient encounters for cancer treatment each year. Statistics reveal an expected 21% growth in new cancer cases in the Triangle and a 13% increase in cancer cases in North Carolina between 2005 and 2010.
Since opening in July 1992, we have provided a home to over 7,000 cancer patients. Most are from North Carolina, but almost 1/3 come from other states and countries.
For many, the affordability of Caring
House means the ability to come to Duke for
treatment. Guests are asked to pay $25.00
per night toward our costs, but the actual cost
for each night is over $75.00. No one
is turned away for the inability to pay.
Caring House is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, governed by a Board of Directors comprised of business, academic, community, and medical leaders. Annual operating costs are $450,000 of which only 18% comes from donations by guests. This leaves over 82% of our funds that must be raised through donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Our Companies of Care make Caring House possible. Their sponsorship enabled us to provide 6,750 guests nights in 2007.
